Shedding Light on Elder Abuse – Understanding, Preventing, and Responding
Elder abuse remains a widespread yet often hidden issue, surrounded by silence and under-addressed across society. This webinar aims to break the taboo, raise awareness, and call for greater public and professional engagement.
Kasia Uzieblo and Lily De Clercq
We are pleased to welcome two experts in the field: Kasia Uzieblo, Flemish coordinator of Helpline 1712 and professor in Criminological and Forensic Psychology at Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Lily De Clercq, staff member at VLOCO (Vlaams Ondersteuningscentrum Ouderenmis(be)handeling), the Flemish Support Centre on Elder Abuse.
Outline
Together, they will explore the definitions and forms of elder abuse, present recent prevalence data from Flanders, and highlight the complex dynamics involved. Drawing on the latest research, they will discuss key risk and protective factors, and explain how both Helpline 1712 and VLOCO address elder abuse through a welfare-based approach focused on prevention, support, and empowerment.
Real-life case examples will illustrate the issues and challenges encountered in practice.
Join us as we bring elder abuse out of the shadows and move toward a collective, informed, and compassionate response.
