Pointer published Merel's story within the United Nations international campaign against violence against women. Merel's ex abused her. He was already imprisoned thirty years ago for trying to kill his then girlfriend and his child. But Merel only found out much later.

Her ex's contact ban is about to expire and she is stuck in a tangle of agencies that can do little. “If he really wants to do harm, no one will get there in time.” What started as a loving relationship later escalated. And despite help from authorities, no one seems to really be able to protect them.
